But if you're buying something that you have NO clue about, and you get scammed you have nobody to blame but yourself. Is he at the end of the game? Nope, he has no idea what he's buying. He got suckered into buying something that at that point in time, didn't affect ANYTHING he was doing. I feel NO pity for somebody that dives headfirst into something that they are clueless about, and it bites them in the butt.
Ok. Then if a friend gets a girlfriend for the first time, and she dups him, you would feel no remorse, am I correct?

Yes, you have a point. People shouldn't relate IG with real world, but your analogy was no more correct than theirs.
Its like the kid that shot himself in his apartment because his character wouldnt marry him. WoW will do that to u, as much as GW will also.

Not.. really. WoW is very subversive while GW on the other hand lacks this kind of quality.

Really, that's the best comparison you could make? How exactly would someone "read up" on what they're getting into when it comes to a relationship? How could you prepare for that, and know in advance that she would break your heart (barring the obvious situation of the girl having a record for doing such things, but it's unlikely she would have such a reputation, and it's possible if you've only recently met that you wouldn't have any way of knowing about it in the first place). It's not like there's a wiki anywhere with information on every girl and their dating habits.

That said, I still yell down scams in allchat, because I do feel sorry for new players or people who don't understand the game mechanics. A personal pet peeve of mine is buying or selling materials or runes for prices outside of the trader's range (buying for less than he buys, selling for more than he sells). You won't believe the number of people I yell at for doing that...only for them to pm me back 10 minutes after I give up, gloating about how they just made another sale, or bought another couple of steel for 90g each.

Enslavement Stones are red, no DoA gem is red, if someone falls for this (failing to see the different color and name) then it's their fault.

However, I DID see someone trying to sell the Stone of the Elements (a quest item from noob island in Cantha) as a Stygian Gem (back when they had value). Those two items look identical. Same shape and color. You still have to miss the different names.

A better example would be a 6 year old has his "girlfriend" break up up with him. I wouldn't feel any remorse because a 6 year old has no idea what to do with or how to treat a woman, just like a new player wouldn't have any idea what a DoA gem was.

CasualPlayer is standing in town.
TradeScammer PMs CasualPlayer and says "Hey wanna buy some enslavement stones?"
CasualPlayer says "What do they do?"
TradeScammers says "If you get to the end of Nightfall you can trade them for cool weapons"
CasualPlayer has never beaten the game yet and says "Oh, maybe I might buy one. How much are they?"
TradeScammer says "Only 5k, want one?"
CasualPlayer says "Hmm description says it's worth 30 gold"
TradeScammer says "Yeah but have you ever gotten a green weapon? They're hard to get and the description says it's worth 50 gold and other players will buy it for 30k. These enslavement stones are the same way, hard to get and the merchant values them for dirt"
CasualPlayer says "Oh I get it. Well 5k doesn't sound bad for something I can trade for a weapon, I'll buy one of those stones from you"

Is CasualPlayer a retard in that scenario? No, they just have no idea what an enslavement stone really is and they have no idea what a wiki or a forum is and they got talked into buying something they don't need by someone who misrepresented what an item does. It can happen to anyone who does not use wikis or forums, which a large portion of the player base does not know exists, and that's why ANet gives at least a temporary ban for any kind of trade scamming.

Both of these posts make remarkable points in their own right and both I 100% agree on. The "scammer" is basically tryign to do nothing more than make a quick buck on the unknowing in the game which happens almost every 5 minutes in online games. Yes its a sad statistic but one which is infact an unfortunate reality, that in almost any scenario, someone will try to take advantage of the less knowledgable. But the simple fact remains that while the person is in the wrong for tryign to take advantage of the newer players to the game, the players themselves are also at a wrong here. All the player who is getting ripped off by this is doing is tryign to get a jump ahead of themselves and unfortunately gets caught tryign to find the "easy way" out of it instead of just progressing normally. In most cases, anyone tryign to take a shortcut instead of just doing what they need to do are the ones who fall victim to this sort of thing.

Do i feel bad for the guy who bought one? Honestly not really for the simple fact that in this day and age, with all the information available to anyone out there, it wouldnt take more than a minute to do a google search on whatever it is that you are unaware of. Information is readily available to anyone at almost any given time, so it is preventable as long as you put the effort into it, but then again it comes down to the player tryign to take the "easy way" out.

True, but that doesn't cancel out the fact that a scammer has scammed someone. We aren't talking about mutually exclusive things here.

I am a firm believer in personal responsibility, but that doesn't mean scammers are fine and dandy if they can take advantage of someone else via fraud and dishonesty.

Only a fool will buy the Brooklyn Bridge or ocean front property in Arizona, but that doesn't mean the con artist shouldn't be condemned or punished for the fraud.

But, that example is extreme, ducktape nailed it perfectly with a far more realistic example:

That pretty much covers it. If we all had perfect knowledge we wouldn't have an excuse for being fooled or falling for a lie. Liars that lie to perpetuate fraud at someone else's expense should be penalized when caught, I simply don't think I am being controversial by stating that.

A lot of you people really want to throw bans out like its no big deal. Banning is a serious offense, and taking money from stupid people shouldn't be ban worthy. This isn't a scam IMO.

I have a friend that waaaaaaaaaaay long ago was talking to somebody that was new to the game and the guy was trading my friend his platinum for my friends gold pieces because he thought gold was worth more. Is that a scam? Or is that just somebody taking an opportunity on somebody that's either stupid or doesn't know better. I suppose you people want him banned for that scam too, huh.
I think that it's a low life type of thing to do. But well if ya hang out with low lifes -----

I would be THRILLED if mean, selfish, exploitive people like you were banned form the game. Anyone who enjoys taking advantage of others is... well, something I can't say in a forum like this.

I'm sure your mother is proud of you.

It is a scam if someone is selling "Titan Gems" and puts "Enslavement Stones" in the trade. Not if someone is selling Ensla. Stones for a high price.

When it comes to taking advantage of newcomers there is a limit and people who do this should be reprimanded. No one is all knowing about everything in life. What if you buy a care and the salesman overcharges you and sells you a lemon and then you find out the car isnt legally yours because of a technicality?

Is it a case omg joo a nubzor, sif not know tha legal system like teh back of yo hand.

Or is it simply a shark scamming you.

Doesnt matter how smart you think you are there are people out there that will find a method to exploit anyone they can for anything they can. Shrugging it off saying oh well dog eat dog doesnt cut it.

Let me put it into words you would understand.... hmmmm

Carz Insurance is like wow nugga i'ma bust a cap in you're fat ass! Lemonz teh badness i'ma blow da car manz teef out! biatch!

people have already taken clips out of the user agreements to define this as a scam, even gaile posted. Not that he was selling them for a high price, he was saying there from DoA, even there is more potential scams he can pull and others can do.

Keep the personally attacks (calling people who disagree with you "mean, selfish, and exploitive") off this thread. Nobody here is taking the scammers' side or is admiting to being a scammer. We are arguing over the degree of guilt.
